A Brief History of Auricular Acupuncture

      * Ancient pictures dating back 2000 years show Chinese physicians engaged in Auricular Acupuncture and Moxibustion in multiple illustrations.

*The Huangdi Internal Medicine Classic, (300 – 200 B.C.) one of three main Oriental Medical texts, discusses auricular therapy.

*The Moxibustion Classic with Eleven Yin-Yang Channels (221 -207 B.C.) discusses it.

*The 10th, 28th and 37th Chapter of the “Marvelous Pivot” text discusses this therapy. (476 – 221 B.C.)

*It is discussed in medical texts of Song Dynasty by Yang Shiying (960 – 1297 A.D.)

      * It is discussed in medical texts of Ming Dynasty by Li Shezhen (1368- 1844 A.D.)

     * It is discussed in medical texts of Jin, Tang, and Yuan Dynasties. (1271 – 1368 A.D)

*In 1960, a doctor at Beijing Pingan Hospital published articles determining 15 unique acupuncture points.  Within a few years, Chinese Physicians had adopted 100 points.

Documents from Egypt 1500 B.C. indicate acupuncture and body-oriented medicine. Ancient mummies show evidence of acupuncture in the Middle Ages, cauterization of the ear was documented as a treatment for certain ailments…particularly pain.
In 1957, French physician and Acupuncturist Paul Nogier M.D., made a monumental leap in his text Treatise of Auricular Therapy.  Nogier found that a map of the ear resembled an inverted fetus.  This is exactly what is pictured in the womb of a pregnant woman.

Since that time, Dr. Terry Oleson of UCLA Pain Management Center started in the early 1970’s developing a seminal manual on Auricular Acupuncture.

In 2007, Dr. Brian Frank published Auricular Medicine and Auricular Therapy.  Amazon says, The newest text by highly acclaimed Anesthesiology/Pain Management/Medical Acupuncture specialist Dr. Bryan L. Frank, this presents the most comprehensive text on Auricular Medicine in over 20 years. Prefaced by Dr. Raphaël Nogier, son of the founder of Auricular Medicine, this text will lead physicians and therapists to a very systematic and logical approach through Auricular Therapy and on to Auricular Medicine. Far more advanced in its potential for both diagnosis and treatment than Auricular Therapy, Auricular Medicine may be integrated into a holistic medical model to enhance understanding of pain and pathology from a biomedical or other conventional and alternative medicine paradigm.”  This, along with Oleson’s manual, are among the first books we put into practice at The Harbour Clinic.

In Early August 2019, Diana and I had the pleasure of attending seminars by Dr. Nader Soliman M.D.  Apparently, Dr. Soliman and Dr. Frank had worked in cohort in the past.  We were certified in SAAT and attended the Auricular Medical seminars by Dr. Soliman.  Regarding Dr. Soliman’s manual, Soliman’s Auricular Therapy Textbook, Amazon says in part, “The auricular acupuncture microsystem is one of the most widely used special acupuncture techniques. This textbook is dedicated to teaching the sound foundations of this unique approach as introduced by its founder Dr. Paul Nogier of France. The scientific bases of the acupuncture microsystem with its three-dimensional holographic presentation is discussed in detail to allow adequate understanding to the functional aptitude of the auricular acupuncture microsystem. This textbook presents the most accurate and updated localizations for the various tissues and organs as well as localizations for brain structures never researched before. This textbook offers unique evidence based clinical approaches for treating common and unusual medical problems in a systematic manner. Numerous beautiful illustrations will guide practitioners in their clinical practice.”

And now….you know at least some of the story of what has gone into treating you with Ear Acupuncture from The Harbour Clinic.
